IMPORTANT NOTICE CONCERNING WEDDINGS IN THE PARISH FROM JANUARY 2026

Weddings in the Parish of Maghera

From January 2026, weddings celebrated in the Parish of Maghera
will normally take place as a Wedding Service (without Mass).

This change reflects the availability of clergy. A priest may not always be available to celebrate
Wedding Mass; however, a deacon may be available to officiate at a Wedding Service.

Couples planning to marry in the parish are asked to bear this in mind when making their wedding arrangements.

For further information or clarification, please contact the parish office.

PARISH CALENDAR

Advent Prayer Corner

In the life of the Church, Advent and the Octave of Christmas form one of the most sacred and joy-filled times of the year — a season of waiting, wonder, and worship. We call it the time of Emmanuel — God with us — when heaven touches earth and light shines again in our world.
During Advent, we prepare our hearts to welcome Christ, the Light of the World. The candles of the Advent wreath remind us that even in the darkness, God’s promise endures. Week by week, we journey from hope to peace, from joy to love — trusting that the Lord will come and dwell among us.

Then, at Christmas, our waiting gives way to celebration as we rejoice in the birth of our Saviour. The Church’s joy overflows into the Octave of Christmas — eight days treated as one great feast, when we continue to marvel at the mystery of the Word made flesh. Each Mass, each prayer, and each hymn during these days keeps alive the wonder of Bethlehem: that God
has come to dwell among His people.

Throughout this holy season, we are invited to open our hearts — to recognise Christ’s presence in the small and simple moments of daily life. In the kindness of a neighbour, the laughter of children, or the quiet peace of prayer, the Lord draws near. The Christ who was born in a manger is born again in every act of love.

Advent and Christmastide also remind us of our deep communion with all God’s people — the saints in glory and the faithful here on earth — united in one family of faith. As we light our candles and gather around the crib, we glimpse something of heaven itself: love made visible in the face of Christ.

As we walk through these blessed days of Advent and the Octave of Christmas, may our hearts be filled with hope, peace, joy, and love — the gifts of the Christ Child who comes to dwell with us.

During Advent and Christmas, We Pray Especially For:

All who wait in hope — that their hearts may be strengthened by the promise of Christ’s coming.

Families preparing for Christmas — that their homes may be places of peace, joy, and welcome.

Those who are lonely, sick, or grieving — that they may feel the comfort of God’s love and the care of our parish community.

Our children and young people — that the light of faith may grow strong in their hearts as they learn the true meaning of Christmas.

Those who serve others during the festive season — carers, health workers, volunteers, and all who bring light into the lives of others.

Refugees and the homeless — that they may find safety, shelter, and compassion, remembering that the Holy Family, too, once sought a place to stay.

Our departed loved ones — that they may share in the eternal joy of the Saviour whose birth we celebrate.

Our parish family — that together we may walk in hope, peace, joy, and love, guided always by the light of Christ.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” — Romans 15:13

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OUR PARISH VOLUNTEERS

As we draw near to the celebration of Christmas and the beginning of a new year, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all who give so generously of their time, talents and hearts in our parish. To our many parish groups, ministries and volunteers — those who serve quietly behind the scenes and those in more visible roles — thank you. Your kindness, dedication and faith are a true reflection of Christ’s love in our community.

Thank you to our sacristans, readers, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers, choir members and musicians, flower arrangers, stewards, collectors and cleaners who prepare our church so beautifully for every Mass and celebration.

Thank you also to the volunteers in our parish shop and coffee shop, whose warmth, friendliness and quiet dedication create places of welcome, conversation and connection. Through a cup of tea, a friendly smile or a listening ear, you help build community and ensure that everyone who enters feels valued and at home.

Thank you to those who visit the sick, care for the bereaved, support our young people, organise parish events, maintain our parish centre, prepare liturgies, count collections, look after our grounds and offer hospitality and welcome.

Each one of you, in your own way, helps to make this parish a living, caring family of faith. Your service is a quiet gift to God and to one another, and it does not go unnoticed.

This Christmas, I pray that the Lord will bless you and your families with peace, hope and joy. May the New Year bring renewed strength, good health and the gentle assurance that God walks with us in all things.

With sincere gratitude and every blessing, Jim

CARING FOR OUR LOVED ONE'S FINAL RESTING PLACES

We kindly encourage all parishioners who have family graves in our cemeteries to consider placing suitable surrounds around the graves and to keep them well maintained. Thoughtfully cared-for graves not only honour the memory of our loved ones but also help keep our cemetery safe, tidy, and respectful for all who visit. Simple upkeep, such as adding or repairing surrounds, trimming grass, and removing old flowers makes a significant difference to the overall appearance of our sacred space. Thank you for helping us preserve the dignity and beauty of our cemetery.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH WELCOME GROUP

We extend a sincere welcome to all our parishioners Especially those who live alone or just feeling lonely Or those of you who feel marginalised, Whilst enduring the pain of isolation. We extend a heartfelt welcome to the bereaved, Hoping you find peace, healing and sanctum, In our Church, Whether attending Mass or lighting A solitary candle. We extend a welcome to you , if you are just out of bed, Or just out of prison and have not seen the inside of a church, for twenty years …. or more. We welcome all who are young And those who are not so young, Who feel religion has been forced on them, Or have a problem with 'organised' religion. We extend a very warm welcome to those of you Living here, far away from your homeland, Or on holiday, Where the Mountain of Mourne Really do sweep down to the sea! We especially extend a welcome to the little ones, From the babies in arms, to the lively toddlers, As Jesus himself said, "suffer little children to come onto me" And remember, these little children will one day, inherit the Earth.
